PREORDER — Walking

Desire, freedom, and politics meet at street level.

Sevgi Soysal braids the lives of Elâ and Memet, two young people coming of age in 1970s Turkey as they test the distance between who they are and who they have been told to become. Their private longings unfold through city streets, family rooms, university conversations, and flashes of the natural world.

First published in 1970 and banned for its unsparing view of sexual politics, Walking is formally restless, sharply observant, and alive to the ways public injustice enters the most intimate parts of a life.

Read this if… you’re drawn to feminist classics, politically alert coming-of-age novels, urban wandering, or fiction that moves by association rather than a straight line.

Translated from Turkish by Maureen Freely, whose work on Sevgi Soysal brings a major twentieth-century writer into English with clarity and bite.
